The January I realized that “Floss more” had been on my list of resolutions for three years running was the year I stopped making New Year’s resolutions. I had never been especially fond of the practice, anyway.
But when I read writer Kelly Johnson’s article about former NFL quarterback and blood pressure health advocate Joe Montana and cardiologist Dr. James Rippe (see page 24), I knew I was in for a set-up. Now I must resolve to check my blood pressure.
Montana’s experience reminded me that just because I’ve never had a problem with high blood pressure, that’s no reason to think I never will. As Montana and Rippe point out, the signs of high blood pressure are often not evident until the problem becomes advanced.
Then, since I had one resolution, others started flooding in: • learn to speak Spanish; • label all the photos in that embarrassingly large pile on my book shelf and put them into albums; • write more letters; • learn the names of all my second cousins; • drink more water; • use the gift certificate for a manicure and pedicure that my husband gave me… a year and a half ago; • go to more music concerts.
And—what the heck—
• floss more.
Now, you’re free to make or not make whatever resolutions you wish. But I know what Joe Montana would say.
