KidsPeace, our nation’s oldest charity focusing solely on the needs of children, celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. In addition to its anniversary, KidsPeace (along with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and other youth charities) celebrates the honor of having First Lady Laura Bush act as honorary chairperson for the annual event, National KidsDay.
Held this year on August 5, National KidsDay provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of having adults spend quality time with children.
KidsPeace, a private, non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing necessary resources to assist children in times of crisis. Founded in 1825 by William Thurston, then president of Bethlehem Iron Company, KidsPeace started out as an interim care facility in Bethlehem, Pa. A few years later, a parcel of private property was donated to the organization by Captain James Wiley. At this point, the name “Wiley House” began to be used.
Through the years, this organization evolved and adapted to the social demands and pressures faced by children and families and as a result changed its name to KidsPeace Corporation in 1992.
Today, the primary vision of KidsPeace is “to be the premier provider of services to help kids facing crisis by offering exemplary programs, operation excellence and leadership that inspires caregivers everywhere.” Several examples of the services offered by KidsPeace include a children’s hospital, schools, diagnostic centers, outpatient clinics, adoption and foster care programs.
The KidsPeace foster care program focuses on the needs of the child and emphasizes training and support for their foster parents.
Currently, 8,100 children in Virginia live in foster care and the system is faced with a shortage of foster parents.
One local couple, Tina and John, decided to become foster parents and contacted the Richmond office of KidsPeace. Tina and John said they found the process and training to become foster parents a no-nonsense, detailed and thought-provoking experience. Tina said she was inspired to become a foster parent because she had been a foster child herself and felt that it was “time to give back.”
Tina hopes that the need for foster parents will begin to receive the necessary exposure and that people will take the step to help the many children living in foster care.
If you are interested in becoming foster parents, contact the KidsPeace National Call Center at 1-866-454-3773. For information relating to National KidsDay events, visit www.kidsday.org.
